New Headway Elementary: English A2.1 Elementary Course Overview

Chapter 1: Hello Everybody!

Get started with introductions! Learn the verb to be (am/is/are) and possessive adjectives (my, your, his, her) to talk about everyday objects, numbers, and greetings like “hello” and “goodbye.”

Chapter 2: Meeting People

Talk about family, ask and answer simple questions, and practice possessive forms (e.g., “Patrick’s daughter”). Master to be questions and negatives (e.g., “What’s her name?”, “She isn’t married”).

Chapter 3: The World of Work

Discuss jobs and work routines using the present simple for he/she/it (e.g., “He works 16 hours a day”). Practice asking and answering questions in the negative (e.g., “Does he speak French? No, he doesn’t”).

Chapter 4: Take It Easy!

Talk about leisure activities and social expressions. Use the present simple for I/you/we/they (e.g., “We go to the gym,” “Why do you like your job?”).

Chapter 5: Where Do You Live?

Describe places using there is/are and prepositions of place (e.g., “There’s a book on the table,” “In front of the fire”). Learn some/any and this/that/these/those to talk about furniture and give directions.

Chapter 6: Can You Speak English?

Use can/can’t for abilities (e.g., “I can ski”), and could/couldn’t for past abilities (e.g., “I could swim when I was five”). Practice was/were (e.g., “Where were you last night?”).

Chapter 7: Then and Now

Explore the past simple with regular and irregular verbs (e.g., “She started work at 18,” “He left school in 1994”). Use time expressions like “last night” and “yesterday morning” to talk about past events.
