Colloquial Korean: Beginner A1.1 Overview
Introduction to Korean Sounds and Hangul
- Learn Korean vowels, nine consonants, diphthongs, aspirated and double consonants.
- Understand word structure and other key aspects of Korean.
Chapter 1: 인사 (Greetings)
- Greet someone appropriately in Korean and address adults.
- Write Korean names.
- Learn the sentence ending -세요, the negative marker 안, the preposition -에, and the topic marker -은/는.
Chapter 2: 친구 소개하기 (Introducing Friends)
- Introduce friends in different settings and say goodbye.
- Practice declarative, interrogative, and request forms.
- Use personal pronouns (e.g., 난, 너, 그).
- Learn subject markers -이/가 and the future tense -겠.
Chapter 3: 사무실에서 (In an Office)
- Visit friends at work and offer refreshments.
- Use built-in honorific vocabulary and honorific insertions -세/시.
- Practice the informal ending -이에요 and the conjunction -아 (어/여) 서.
Chapter 4: 길 묻기 (Asking for Directions)
- Express location and direction.
- Form negative sentences and use informal verb endings -아 (어/여) 서.
- Learn sentence endings -ㄹ (을) 거에요 and -야 하다, and the conditional conjunction -(으) 면.
Chapter 5: 어디 가세요 (Where Are You Going?)
- Discuss trips and use honorific markers 시/세.
- Learn the preposition -에 (place and time) and the existential verb 있다.
- Use the honorific subject marker -께서, the sentence ending -(이)거던요, and vocabulary for public places and transport.
Chapter 6: 이것이 무엇입니까? (What Is This?)
- Make basic requests and answer identity questions.
- Use pointing words (e.g., 이것, 그것, 저것), topic marker -은/는, and sentence endings -이에요/아니에요, -는데요.
Chapter 7: 이것이 무엇입니까? (Going Out for Lunch)
- Read Korean menus and order food.
- Use past tense (plain and honorific), suggestive endings (e.g., -실까요?/-(ㅂ)시다), and object marker -을/를.
- Apply the empathic marker -도 and informal ending -지요.
- Practice Korean numbers (1–100).
Chapter 8: 이것이 무엇입니까? (Making an Appointment)
- Make and decline appointments, tell time.
- Learn conjunctions -는데, -지만, -ㄴ(은)후에, the noun modifier -ㄴ(은), and the preposition -하고.
Chapter 9: 택시잡기 (Taking a Taxi)
- Take a taxi, communicate with drivers, and pay fares using Korean money.
- Use conjunctions -이고, -아 (어) 서, and sentence endings -ㄹ (을) 수 있다, -시죠.
- Understand the verb -걸리다 and compound verbs 내려주다 vs 내려드리다.
Chapter 10: 물건사기 (Shopping)
- Shop at Korean markets and negotiate prices.
- Learn the long negation form -지 않다, comparative and superlative structures.
- Use the contrastive conjunction -(으)나 and sentence endings -ㄹ(을), 것 같다, ㄴ(은/는)데요, -ㄹ(을)게요.
